Run a crawl on almost any website and you will see a long list of warnings. Most are minor. A few can quietly stop your pages from being found at all. Use this order of priority to focus on what matters.
1. Pages blocked from crawling or indexing
Check your robots.txt file and look for stray noindex tags. A page that search engines cannot crawl or index cannot rank, and this is a common cause of sudden traffic drops after a site redesign.
2. Server errors and broken pages
Pages returning 5xx errors, or important pages returning 404, waste crawl budget and frustrate visitors. Fix server errors first, then redirect or restore removed pages that still have links or traffic.
3. Redirect chains and loops
A redirect that passes through three other redirects slows the page and dilutes signals. Point every old URL directly to its final destination with a single 301 redirect.
4. Duplicate content and canonicals
If the same content is reachable at several URLs, such as with and without a trailing slash, or with tracking parameters, set a canonical tag so search engines know which version to rank.
5. Missing or duplicate titles and meta descriptions
Every page should have a unique, descriptive title. Meta descriptions do not directly affect rankings, but a clear one improves click-through from search results.
6. Thin or orphaned pages
Pages with almost no content, or pages that nothing links to, rarely perform. Improve, merge or remove thin pages, and add internal links to valuable pages that are hard to reach.
7. Page speed and Core Web Vitals
Slow pages lose visitors and can lose rankings. Compress images, reduce unused scripts and make sure the main content loads quickly on mobile.
8. Mobile usability
Most searches happen on phones. Check that text is readable, buttons are easy to tap and nothing overflows the screen.
9. Internal linking and site structure
Important pages should be reachable within a few clicks of the homepage, with descriptive link text. Good internal links spread authority and help search engines understand what each page is about.
10. HTTPS and mixed content
Make sure the whole site loads securely and no page pulls in insecure resources.
How to work through the list
Fix issues that block indexing first, then those that affect many pages, then the polish. Re-crawl after each round to confirm the fixes worked. Run a site audit with DataFlowSEO.
